alb4403306 Maurice Brazil Prendergast: Idyl, Maurice Brazil Prendergast, c. 1912–1915, Oil on canvas, Maurice Prendergast was an American artist who applied the lessons of French post-impressionism to his own work. The bold brushwork you see here, for example, which lends the canvas its rough texture, was influenced by the pointillist technique of Georges Seurat. Idyl alludes to a classical tradition of depicting nude women posed in the outdoors. Prendergast updates that tradition by mixing in clothed and half-dressed figures who come across not as classical muses but as self-possessed, modern women. The frame for this painting was made by Charles Prendergast, the artist's brother., Overall: 24 x 32 1/8 in. (61 x 81.6 cm).

alb3670603 Landscape at Saint-Ouen. Artist: Georges Seurat (French, Paris 1859-1891 Paris). Dimensions: Overall 6 7/8 x 10 3/8 in. (17.5 x 26.4 cm); painted surface 6 5/8 x 10 in. (16.8 x 25.4 cm). Date: 1878 or 1879.Dated to 1878 or 1879, this is the earliest known of Seurat's landscape oil sketches. His good friend, the artist Aman-Jean, remembered him painting it on site at Saint-Ouen, a northern suburb of Paris. Seurat introduced warm, orangey-brown hues into the composition by allowing the wood panel support to show through between his brushstrokes. This work was originally part of a double-sided panel that was divided after 1950 into two separate pictures. The other side, now in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, features a landscape with a copy after Puvis de Chavannes's The Poor Fisherman (1881; Musée d'Orsay). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: GEORGES SEURAT.

alb3608661 The Gardener. Artist: Georges Seurat (French, Paris 1859-1891 Paris). Dimensions: 6 1/4 x 9 3/4 in. (15.9 x 24.8 cm). Date: 1882-83.Although Seurat is best known for his scenes of urban life, many of his paintings of 1881-84 depict rural laborers and landscapes. He initially favored an earth-toned palette reminiscent of the work of earlier painters of the countryside, such as Jean-François Millet. However, the bright hues of this picture reflect Seurat's growing interest in Impressionist techniques and his reading of treatises on color, especially the American Ogden Rood's Modern Chromatics (published in English in 1879, and in French in 1881). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: GEORGES SEURAT.

alb3613812 The Forest at Pontaubert. Artist: Georges Seurat (French, Paris 1859-1891 Paris). Dimensions: 31 1/8 x 24 5/8 in. (79.1 x 62.5 cm). Date: 1881.Seurat spent two months in the late summer and early fall of 1881 in Pontaubert, a village southeast of Paris once frequented by Daubigny, Corot, and other Barbizon landscape painters. His visit inspired this sous-bois or forest glade, which Seurat probably completed that winter in the studio he shared with his traveling companion and fellow artist Aman-Jean. With its concert of greens, its subtle, shimmering light effects, and its vertical pattern of tree trunks, this work anticipates the verdant settings of Seurat's monumental Bathers at Asnières in London (1884) and A Sunday on La Grande Jatte in Chicago (1884-86). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: GEORGES SEURAT.

He painted six views of the seaport and its surrounding countryside. His intention was 'to translate as exactly as possible the luminosity of the open air, with all its nuances.' Although Seurat shared the Impressionists' goal of translating nature's light and color, he also wished to make Impressionism more precise. He wanted to replace its spontaneous, improvisational qualities with a more systematic, objective approach that could reflect the essential structures of a landscape, not just its transitory effects. To this end, Seurat developed an unusual new technique, variously called pointillism, divisionism, or Neo-Impressionism. He juxtaposed small dots of pigment according to his interpretation of scientific theories of color and optics. His followers, like Paul Signac, continued the pointillist style after Seurat's early death from pneumonia.

Several of these studies were painted near Asnieres in north-west Paris, and the design of this study is close to the finished painting. The picture retains the quality of an open-air sketch, but the detail is carefully delineated with small touches of paint. Oil on wood, 15.5 × 24.5 cm, 1883. London, National Gallery. Date: 1882-83.This tranquil portrait of the artist's mother, Ernestine Faivre, is a tour de force of modeling in Conté crayon, Seurat's favorite graphic medium. The work is drawn entirely without line in tonal passages of velvety black. Scarce atmospheric light, subtly evoked by lessening pressure on the crayon, illuminates the interior where the woman sews, creating a serene ambiance of quiet domesticity. The abstract beauty achieved in such works earned the praise of fellow artist Paul Signac, who called them "the most beautiful painter's drawings that ever existed.". Date: 1882-83.This unbridled foal is remarkably anomalous among Seurat's drawings. Its flurry of scratchy lines and sense of unrestrained motion contrast the silence and calm generally found in Seurat's velvety Conté crayon sheets. Seurat kept this drawing through his short life, after which it passed to fellow Neo-Impressionist Henri Edmond Cross, another artist favored by Robert Lehman. Adopting Seurat's systemof color harmony, Signac argued for the meticulousapplication of precise hues in separate strokes ofpaint across the canvas, a technique he said evoked"brilliantly colored lights." This painting is one offive related images of fishing boats near the Frenchtown of Concarneau, in Brittany. Signac endowedhis Concarneau paintings with musical sub-titles,suggesting a symphonic arrangement. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3665856 Study for "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte". Artist: Georges Seurat (French, Paris 1859-1891 Paris). Dimensions: 6 1/8 x 9 1/2 in. (15.6 x 24.1 cm). Date: 1884.This small panel is one of approximately fifty oil sketches and drawings made as preparatory studies for Seurat's monumental masterpiece, A Sunday on La Grand Jatte. Painted from 1884-86, the scene depicts Parisians at leisure on an island in the Seine. Illustrating Seurat's process of investigation, the figures in the present panel were significantly transformed in the final painting. Seurat's style came to be known as Pointillism (from the French word "point," or "dot"), but he preferred the term divisionism--the principle of separating color into small touches placed side-by-side and meant to blend in the eye of the viewer. alb3680228 Gray Weather, Grande Jatte. Artist: Georges Seurat (French, Paris 1859-1891 Paris). Dimensions: 27 3/4 x 34 in. (70.5 x 86.4 cm). Date: ca. 1886-88.This view extends from the island of La Grande Jatte, framed by trees, to the red-roofed houses of the Paris suburb of either Asnières or Courbevoie across the Seine. Seurat had earlier celebrated this stretch of the river with his ambitious compositions Bathers at Asnières (1883-84, National Gallery, London) and A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (1884-86, Art Institute of Chicago). Here he sought "to transcribe most exactly the vivid outdoor clarity [of nature] in all its nuances" using a technique known as Divisionism (also called Pointillism). The painted border was added shortly before the picture was first exhibited in 1889. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: GEORGES SEURAT.

alb3608509 Self-Portrait. Artist: Charles Angrand (French, Criquetot-sur-Ouville 1854-1926 Rouen). Dimensions: 24 x 17 1/2 in. (61 x 44.4 cm). Date: 1892.A close friend and follower of Georges Seurat and a founding member of the Neo-Impressionist movement, Angrand was a master of Conté crayon, preferring to work in its limited palette of black, white, and gray. Here Angrand presents himself, not at all as an artist, but as a bourgeois dandy, impeccably dressed and smoking a cigar. Angrand's technical ability in this self-portrait is stunning. In the words of an early critic, Angrand's image seems to emerge from a "luminous mist." Fellow Neo-Impressionist Paul Signac praised Angrand's crayon drawings: "his drawings are masterpieces. It would be impossible to imagine a better use of white and black. These are the most beautiful drawings, poems of light, of fine composition and execution." Many of the Neo-Impressionists were friends, as evidenced by the numerous extant Conté crayon depictions they made of themselves and of one another. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Date: 1882-83.Seurat's study of his friend the artist Aman-Jean (1860-1936) ranks as one of the great portrait drawings of the nineteenth century. Aman-Jean and Seurat were both students at the École Municipale du Dessin and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris; they shared a studio in 1879. The drawing is not a preparatory study for a painting but a finished work. Shown in the Paris Salon of 1883, it was the first work to be exhibited by the twenty-three-year-old artist. Seurat's signature use of conté crayon on textured laid Michallet paper of high quality resulted in drawings with luminosity and tonal harmony, and the classic balanced pose of the artist in profile, focusing intently on his work, gives the image an enduring, timeless quality.
